Understanding the Math

How Solar Panel Sizing Actually Works

Sizing a solar system comes down to one question: how much energy do you use in a day, and how much can your panels realistically produce given your location’s sunlight? Most homeowners either oversize (wasting money on panels they don’t need) or undersize (running out of power on cloudy days), because they skip the actual math.

The rough formula looks like this:

  1. Add up your daily energy use in kilowatt-hours (check your utility bill, or add up appliance wattage x hours used)
  2. Divide that by your area’s average peak sun hours per day (typically 4 to 6 hours in most of the US)
  3. Divide again by your panel’s wattage, then add roughly 25% to cover system losses from wiring, inverter efficiency, and dust

A household using 20 kWh a day in a region with 5 peak sun hours would need roughly 5 kW of solar capacity, which usually works out to around 12 to 14 panels rated at 400W each. The Solar Panel Size Calculator handles this automatically once you enter your usage and location.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these energy calculators actually free?
Yes, every calculator on Solvebility is free to use. There’s no sign-up, no trial period, and nothing hidden behind a paywall. Accurate energy math shouldn’t cost anything.
How accurate are the results?
The formulas are checked against industry standards and reviewed by people with actual energy engineering experience. Results are solid estimates based on what you enter. For a large-scale installation, it’s still worth getting a certified professional to confirm the numbers.
Can I use these for commercial or industrial projects?
Yes. The calculators are built to scale from a single appliance up to a full commercial generator setup, so the input ranges work for both residential and industrial use.
What units do the calculators use?
Most tools default to SI units (kW, kWh, liters) but let you switch to imperial equivalents where it makes sense. Currency fields are flexible too, so you can enter your local electricity rate or fuel price directly.
Do I need any technical background to use these tools?
No. Every calculator has clear labels, sensible default values, and short explanations for anything technical. If you know your monthly electricity bill or your appliance’s wattage, that’s really all you need to get started.
