How US College GPA Works

GPA (Grade Point Average) is the weighted average of your course grades, where each course is weighted by its credit hours. Most US colleges use a 4.0 scale, with letter grades mapped to grade points as shown in the table.

Your semester GPA covers one term, while your cumulative GPA (CGPA) averages across every semester you have completed. Graduate school programs typically require a 3.0+ GPA, and competitive scholarships often look for 3.5+.

The formula is straightforward:

  • Multiply each course’s grade points by its credit hours
  • Add all those products together (quality points)
  • Divide by total credit hours attempted

A 4-credit course carries four times the weight of a 1-credit elective — so earning an A in a core course matters much more than acing a 1-credit lab.
