Online BA II Plus Calculator: Step-by-Step Guide (2026)

An online BA II Plus calculator saves you a trip to the store. The keys still take practice, though: 45 of them, and almost every one hides a 2nd function. So where do you even start?

Most guides tell you to buy the handheld first. If you only need to check a loan payment, run an NPV, or rehearse before a finance exam, that advice costs you a week.

In this guide, you’ll learn every working feature of the Solvebility online BA II Plus calculator, one tab at a time, with the exact key presses for each. I pressed every key and every 2nd function on September 19, 2026, in Chrome, then checked the results against hand math. Every number in the worked examples came out of that test run.

You’ll also see what doesn’t work yet, so you don’t burn an evening chasing a bug that isn’t yours.

What Is an Online BA II Plus Calculator?

Quick Answer:

An online BA II Plus calculator is a browser version of the Texas Instruments BA II Plus financial calculator. It solves time value of money, amortization, cash flow, bond, and depreciation problems without any hardware. Solvebility’s version is free, needs no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser.

The original is a Texas Instruments handheld. Finance, accounting, and real estate students lean on it, and CFA Institute lists it as one of only two approved exam calculators (policy updated January 12, 2026).

Solvebility’s version copies the 45-key layout, the green display, and the 2nd key logic. It has no backend, so your numbers stay on your device. It’s independent software, which means a few keys behave differently from the handheld. I flag each one as we go.

How Do You Use the BA II Plus Keypad and 2nd Key?

Quick Answer:

Press a key for its main job, or press 2nd first to use the small label above it. Digits, ENTER, the arrow keys and CPT run every worksheet. Press CE/C once to clear your entry and twice to clear your working values. Press 2nd then +/- to reset the whole calculator.

Eight habits cover almost everything you’ll do on this online BA II Plus calculator.

  1. Read the display. The top row shows flags such as 2nd, BGN, CF and COMPUTE. The small line under it names the field you’re editing.
  2. Press 2nd to reach a small label. The 2nd flag lights up and clears after your next key.
  3. Use ↓ and ↑ to move between fields inside a worksheet.
  4. Press ENTER to save a value you’ve typed.
  5. Press CPT when you want an answer. In TVM, press CPT and then the variable you want.
  6. Press CE/C to clear. Once clears your entry, twice clears your working values.
  7. Press 2nd then CPT (QUIT) to leave a worksheet.
  8. Press 2nd then +/- (RESET) to return everything to defaults.
💡 Pro Tip

Trust the digits in this guide over the printed labels. Key 1 says DATE and key 2 says ICONV, but 2nd + 1 opens Statistics and 2nd + 2 opens Date.

What Can You Calculate? BA II Plus Features, Tab by Tab

Quick Answer:

This online BA II Plus calculator covers ten areas: time value of money, amortization, cash flows with NPV and IRR, bonds, depreciation, statistics, dates, memory, everyday math, and display skins. Each tab below gives the exact keys and a tested example, so you can follow along on the calculator.

How Do You Solve Time Value of Money Problems?

Quick Answer:

To solve a time value of money problem, enter four of the five TVM values, then press CPT and the missing one. The five variables are N, I/Y, PV, PMT and FV. On this online BA II Plus calculator you press the variable key first, type the number, and press ENTER.

Keys: N I/Y PV PMT FV CPT, plus 2nd + I/Y for P/Y, 2nd + PMT for BGN, and 2nd + FV for CLR TVM.

Here’s the catch with entry order. On the handheld you type 10 and then press N. Here, typing 10 first and then pressing N drops the number. Press N, type 10, then press ENTER.

Cash you pay out is negative and cash you receive is positive. Type the amount, press +/-, then ENTER. P/Y starts at 1 on this calculator, so set it to 12 for monthly loans.

Worked example: a $200,000 loan

Take Maria, a finance student in Toronto. She’s checking a homework answer: the monthly payment on $200,000 at 6% for 30 years.

  1. Press 2nd FV to clear the TVM values.
  2. Press 2nd I/Y, type 12, press ENTER (P/Y).
  3. Press N, type 360, press ENTER.
  4. Press I/Y, type 6, press ENTER.
  5. Press PV, type 200000, press ENTER.
  6. Press FV, type 0, press ENTER.
  7. Press CPT, then PMT.

The display reads -1,199.10. The minus sign only means the cash leaves your pocket, and the figure matches the standard loan payment formula.

Payments due at the start of each period? Press 2nd PMT and the BGN flag lights up. My 5-year, $1,000 annuity at 8% went from a present value of 3,992.71 to 4,312.13 with BGN on. Want a second opinion on plain compound growth? The SEC’s Investor.gov compound interest calculator runs a similar idea.

💡 Pro Tip

Press 2nd then FV before every new problem. Old values are the top reason for a payment that looks wrong.

How Do You Build an Amortization Schedule?

Quick Answer:

Solve the loan’s PMT in the TVM tab first. Then press 2nd and PV to open AMORT on the online BA II Plus calculator, enter the first and last payment numbers (P1 and P2), and read BAL, PRN and INT. The worksheet splits any range of payments into principal and interest.

Keys: 2nd + PV (AMORT), ↓, ENTER, CPT.

Worked example: the first year of Maria’s loan

  1. Finish the $200,000 loan from the TVM tab so PMT is stored.
  2. Press 2nd PV.
  3. Type 1 and press ENTER (P1). The calculator jumps to P2.
  4. Type 12 and press ENTER (P2). The display shows BAL 197,543.99.
  5. Press ↓ for PRN: -2,456.01.
  6. Press ↓ again for INT: -11,933.19.
  7. Scroll back to BAL and press CPT to jump to payments 13 to 24. BAL is now 194,936.50.

Look at those first-year numbers. Out of 14,389.20 paid, 11,933.19 went to interest. That’s about 83% of your money in year 1. Most people are surprised by that split.

💡 Pro Tip

Press 2nd then CPT (QUIT) to leave AMORT. Press CPT on BAL again to keep stepping through the schedule, 12 payments at a time.

How Do You Calculate NPV and IRR?

Quick Answer:

On the online BA II Plus calculator, open the CF worksheet, enter the starting cash flow and each later cash flow with its frequency, then press NPV or IRR. NPV uses the rate stored in I/Y, so set that first. IRR needs no rate. Both answers appear the moment you press the key.

Keys: CF NPV IRR ↓ ↑ ENTER, plus 2nd + ↓ (INS) and 2nd + ↑ (DEL).

Worked example: a $10,000 project at an 8% discount rate

You pay 10,000 today. You receive 3,000 a year for 2 years, then 5,000 a year for 2 years.

  1. Press I/Y, type 8, press ENTER.
  2. Press CF. At CF0, type 10000, press +/-, then ENTER.
  3. Press ↓. At C01, type 3000 and press ENTER.
  4. Press ↓. At F01, type 2 and press ENTER.
  5. Press ↓ and enter C02 as 5000, then ↓ and enter F02 as 2.
  6. Press NPV. The answer is 2,994.10.
  7. Press IRR. The answer is 19.47.

F means frequency: how many periods in a row that cash flow repeats. A positive NPV at 8% and an IRR near 19.5% both say the project clears your hurdle rate.

💡 Pro Tip

Keep P/Y at 1 for yearly cash flows. And note that the handheld asks you for the rate after you press NPV. This version skips that prompt and reads I/Y.

How Do You Find a Bond’s Price or Yield?

Quick Answer:

Open BOND with 2nd and 9. Move through the fields with the arrow keys, set the coupon (CPN), redemption value (RV) and yield (YLD), then press CPT on PRI for the price. To find the yield instead, enter the price and press CPT on YLD.

Keys: 2nd + 9, ↓, ↑, ENTER, CPT.

This online BA II Plus calculator runs the fields in this order: SDT (settlement date), MDT (maturity date), CPN, RV, YLD, PRI, and BASIS. Defaults are 01.01.2026, 01.01.2031, 5, 100, 5, 100 and ACT/365. Press ENTER on BASIS to switch between ACT/365 and ACT/360.

Worked example: a 5% coupon bond at a 6% yield

  1. Press 2nd 9.
  2. Press ↓ four times to reach YLD.
  3. Type 6 and press ENTER.
  4. Press ↓ to reach PRI, then press CPT. The price is 95.73.

To go the other way, type 95.73 on PRI, press ENTER, press ↑ to YLD, and press CPT. You get 6.00.

💡 Pro Tip

The date fields look blank (0.00) and can’t be edited yet, so every bond runs on the default 5-year window. Coupon, redemption value, yield and price all work.

How Do You Calculate Depreciation?

Quick Answer:

Open DEPR with 2nd and 4. Enter COST, SALV (salvage), LIFE and PERIOD, pick SL, SYD or DB by pressing ENTER on METHOD, then press CPT on DEP. A $10,000 asset with $1,000 salvage and a 5-year life gives $1,800 in year 1 with straight line.

Keys: 2nd + 4, ↓, ENTER, CPT.

Worked example: one asset, three methods

  1. Press 2nd 4. The defaults are already COST 10,000, SALV 1,000, LIFE 5 and PERIOD 1.
  2. Press ↓ four times to reach METHOD (it shows SL).
  3. Press ↓ once more to reach DEP, then CPT. Straight line gives 1,800.00.
  4. Go back to METHOD and press ENTER once for SYD, then ↓ and CPT. You get 3,000.00.
  5. Press ENTER twice on METHOD for DB, then ↓ and CPT. You get 4,000.00.

These are book methods for financial statements. For US tax returns, the IRS uses MACRS instead, which IRS Publication 946 explains in full.

What Can the Statistics Worksheet Do?

Quick Answer:

Open STAT with 2nd and 1, then type each data point and press ENTER to add it. Today the worksheet stores your data but doesn’t display the mean, standard deviation or sums. CPT shows regression values a, b and r. For full statistics, use the advanced scientific calculator instead.

Keys: 2nd + 1, digits, ENTER, CPT, 2nd + CPT (QUIT).

The worksheet opens in one-variable mode and shows X01. Type a number, press ENTER, and it joins the data set. Press CPT for the linear regression line, shown in the small line under the display as a, b and r.

That’s a narrow slice of what the handheld does. If you need mean, sample deviation and population deviation, Solvebility’s advanced scientific calculator covers statistics with full-precision math.

How Do You Count Days Between Two Dates?

Quick Answer:

Open DATE with 2nd and 2. The worksheet shows DATE1, and the down arrow shows DATE2. Press CPT to get the number of days between them. Dates use month.day.year format, so January 1, 2026 reads 01.01.2026. The default pair returns 365 days.

Keys: 2nd + 2, ↓, ↑, CPT, 2nd + CPT (QUIT).

  1. Press 2nd 2. DATE1 shows 01.01.2026.
  2. Press ↓. DATE2 shows 01.01.2027.
  3. Press CPT. The result is 365 days.
💡 Pro Tip

Typing a new date currently returns Error INVALID, because the keypad accepts only one decimal point per entry. Until that changes, this tab works with the default dates.

How Do You Store and Recall Numbers?

Quick Answer:

Type a number, press STO, then a digit from 0 to 9 to save it. Press RCL and the same digit to bring it back. Press 2nd then 0 to list all ten registers at once. After STO, press CE/C or equals before you type the next number.

Keys: STO RCL 2nd + 0 (MEM), ENTER, CE/C.

Worked example: add two stored numbers

  1. Type 100, press STO 1, then CE/C.
  2. Type 200, press STO 2, then CE/C.
  3. Press RCL 1 + RCL 2 =. The answer is 300.00.

Skip that CE/C and the next number glues onto the last one. I typed 100, stored it, then typed 200 and got 100200. Inside the MEM list, ENTER clears all ten registers and CE/C closes the list.

Which Math Functions and Display Settings Work?

Quick Answer:

The main keypad handles percent, square root, square, reciprocal, natural log, e to the x, powers and factorials. Chain calculation runs left to right, so 2 + 3 × 4 equals 20. Press 2nd then the decimal key to cycle the FIX, FLOAT and SCI display formats.

  • Percent: 200 + 10 % shows 20.00, and = gives 220.00. 200 – 15 % = gives 170.00.
  • Powers: 2 yˣ 10 = gives 1,024.
  • Factorial: type 5, press 2nd ×, and you get 120.
  • Combinations and permutations: type 5, press +, type 2, then press 2nd + for nCr (10) or 2nd - for nPr (20).
  • Random number: 2nd ÷ returns a value between 0 and 1.
  • Inverse trig in degrees: 0.5 then 2nd ( gives 30.00. The ) and yˣ keys give arccosine and arctangent.
  • ROUND: 2nd STO rounds the value to the display format.

The online BA II Plus calculator starts at 2 decimals, and the calculator keeps more digits behind the scenes. Right now the decimal-place menu isn’t reachable, so FORMAT only cycles the style.

How Do You Change Skins and Use Keyboard Shortcuts?

Quick Answer:

Pick a skin from the menu under the keypad: Classic, Midnight, Slate, Ocean, Warm or Light. The calculator remembers your choice after a reload. Your physical keyboard works too: digits, operators, Enter, Escape for CE/C, Backspace, and the @ key for 2nd.

What Doesn’t Work Yet in This BA II Plus Calculator?

Quick Answer:

Several handheld functions are missing or behave differently in this version. Parentheses, plain sin, cos and tan, statistics results, custom dates, percent change, break-even, interest conversion and profit margin don’t work yet. Knowing the gaps saves you time on your next problem.

I found these by pressing every key and every 2nd function, then comparing the results with what the handheld does. Some are missing features. Others are quirks in how the keys respond.

One more thing people ask about: the negative payment. It isn’t a bug. It’s the sign convention, and cash you pay out always shows as negative.

Need one of these missing pieces today? Use a physical BA II Plus for that step. And if you keep juggling tools, the education calculators hub puts Solvebility’s student tools in one place.

Can You Use an Online BA II Plus Calculator for the CFA Exam and Coursework?

Quick Answer:

You can use it for practice, homework checks and quick loan math. You can’t use it on the CFA exam. CFA Institute authorizes only the Texas Instruments BA II Plus, including the Professional model, and the HP 12C. For coursework, follow your instructor’s rules.

CFA Institute’s calculator policy, updated January 12, 2026, names those two models. Your calculator is inspected before the exam, and using an unauthorized one can void your results. So treat this tool as a practice partner. Learn the flow here, then rehearse on the real handheld before test day.

Finance students juggle more than one tool, too. The GPA and CGPA calculator tracks your grades. The AI daily study planner builds an exam schedule, and the Pomodoro timer keeps each session short. All three sit alongside this calculator in Solvebility’s education tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an online BA II Plus calculator?

An online BA II Plus calculator is a browser-based copy of the Texas Instruments BA II Plus financial calculator. It solves loan payments, cash flows, bonds and depreciation on any device. Solvebility’s version is free, needs no account, and runs in your browser without a backend.

How does the time value of money worksheet work?

You enter four of the five variables (N, I/Y, PV, PMT, FV), press CPT, and then press the fifth. The calculator solves the missing one. On this version, press the variable key first, type the number, and press ENTER. Payments you make are negative, and money you receive is positive.

Why use an online BA II Plus calculator instead of a physical one?

You can open it instantly on a phone or laptop, with nothing to buy or carry. That makes it handy for homework checks, quick loan math and learning the key sequences. Keep in mind it can’t replace the handheld in exams that require an approved device.

When is the online version the right choice?

Use the online BA II Plus calculator when you’re practicing, checking a homework answer, or running a quick loan or NPV problem away from your desk. Skip it for proctored exams and for problems that need missing functions such as statistics results, custom dates or percent change. For those, reach for the handheld.

How much does the online BA II Plus calculator cost?

Solvebility’s online BA II Plus calculator is free, with no subscription and no sign-up. The physical handheld costs money, and retail prices vary by seller and model, so check current listings. If you only need the calculator for study and quick checks, the free version saves you that purchase.

How does the BA II Plus compare with the HP 12C?

The BA II Plus uses algebraic entry, so 2 + 3 = works as you’d write it. The HP 12C uses reverse Polish notation, where you enter the numbers before the operator. Both are approved for the CFA exam. Most beginners find the BA II Plus easier, and many prep providers teach it.

Is the online BA II Plus calculator worth using?

Yes, for the tabs that work: TVM, AMORT, cash flows, bonds and depreciation all returned correct results in my tests. It’s a solid way to learn key sequences for free. It’s less useful for statistics, custom dates and percent change, which aren’t available yet.

Why is my loan payment negative on the BA II Plus?

The calculator follows a cash-flow sign convention. Money you receive, such as a loan amount, is positive, and money you pay out, such as the monthly payment, is negative. Your $200,000 loan at 6% over 30 years shows -1,199.10. The minus sign only tells you the direction of the cash.

Your Next Step: Solve One Real Loan

You now know every tab of this online BA II Plus calculator, what each one returns, and where it falls short. TVM, AMORT, cash flows, bonds and depreciation all work. Statistics, custom dates and a few other functions still need the handheld.

You’ve got what you need to check real problems with confidence. Start with one: press 2nd then FV, set P/Y to 12, and enter N 360, I/Y 6, PV 200000 and FV 0. Then press CPT and PMT. If you see -1,199.10, you’re set.
